LNA has an incredible opportunity to be awarded support for a new community garden and Lyndale’s Food Share program through the Wedge’s WedgeShare program.  Founded in 1997, the Wedge Board of Directors created the charitable giving program based on Cooperative principle #7, Concern for Community.  Presently the Wedge makes WedgeShare grants in amounts up to but not exceeding $10,000 to select organizations that are working to create a sustainable future.

The past few weeks we’ve been having a lot of conversations around the office about what is community leadership and what it means to be a community leader.  As you might imagine this is a pretty important topic for an organization whose whole reason for existence is about helping community members shape their neighborhood.

This past month Lyndale begun working on the Nicollet Votes project. The goal for this project is to increase voter turnout in the Lyndale, Kingfield, Stevens Square, and Whittier neighborhoods from 57 percent to 65 percent in this non-presidential election year and to have over a thousand conversations with community members about what is important to them in their neighborhood. The project will do this through voter registration, being present at community events, phone banks, and thirty-two neighborhood doorknocks.

The Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) is an award-winning, nationally recognized community-based organization in South Minneapolis on the cutting edge of community development.  LNA is currently seeking an experienced community leader to serve as LNA’s Community Organizer for the Latino Community.

I was fortunate to spend a recent afternoon in conversation with a remarkable woman.  Donna L. den Boer currently resides at Redeemer Residence in the Lyndale Neighborhood, but like many octogenarians, she has had adventures far beyond the boundaries of a home for the elderly and of this South Minneapolis neighborhood.

Betchya didn’t know the Market on Grand is on the official Party Bus line. At least it was a few weeks ago, when a busload-o-half-in-the-bag design firm employees stopped in to scoop up an armload of totally unhealthy snacks. Oh, and to give their former coworker buddy (accounting-guy-turned-entrepreneur) a big ole Terr-bear hug. (Line out the door for that!)

As the Program Assistant for the Women’s Leadership Program, Teresa Saucedo works with the program facilitator to help explain information for the sessions to participants, assists in program activities, helps to shape the agendas, and is working up to facilitating more sessions.  During a recent program session, Teresa led the discussion and shared her story, talking about an Aunt that inspired her to become more involved in civic life.  Her Aunt’s engagement in politics and civic life provided a strong foundation for Teresa to become involved in the community.

¡Calles Abiertas!
