There we were at the Neighborhoods USA conference.  LNA Board member Eric Perich and I were up front with all of the other finalists, standing in front of an entire conference room full of people involved in neighborhoods from across the country, waiting to find out if we were going to be the Neighborhood of the Year.

Just as all the finalists in our category were getting settled in up front, looking around at each other trying to figure out what was next, we heard our name called, much earlier than we wanted to - which meant we didn’t win and were just a finalist this year.

Join us for the Lyndale Neighborhood’s Association (LNA) Annual Meeting on Monday, June 24th at Painter Park.  The Annual Meeting is a great chance for you to hear about everything LNA has been up to this past year and see what is ahead for next year.

At the meeting we will be presenting Luther Krueger and Brenda Sauer with this year’s Lyndale Community Service Award.  Luther is one of the founders of the LNA’s Crime and Drug Committee, the Lyndale Walkers, and a leader on helping to make the neighborhood safe for over 20 years.

This is the third year of Open Streets MPLS.  It began in 2011 with over two miles of South Lyndale Avenue being converted from a car-oriented environment to a people-centered place.  Open Streets MPLS provides an exciting opportunity for residents to enjoy streets as public space and experience their neighborhood in a whole new way.  During Open Streets, a street full of people, families, art and activity brings a new sense of vibrancy and conviviality to our major street corridors.

When I met with ESL volunteer Yusuf Moede during the morning class last week he had on a beautiful green, purple, and white batik shirt.  Batik is a wax resist dying technique involving numerous dips in different color dyes until ultimately, the wax is melted off exposing a beautiful and multi-layered pattern.  After talking with Yusuf for awhile, his batik shirt seemed to become a metaphor for the journey that brought him to the Lyndale ESL program.

Volunteer Committee member Linda Alton shares a story of a young couple on her block who were despondent over the prospect of having to move.  Although only in Lyndale a short time, they loved the neighborhood, their neighbors, and the community built here.  The block mobilized, coming up with possible solutions and proved to be a microcosm of the kind of neighborhood we live in.  “The work you all do here for others really permeates the atmosphere of what is possible in Lyndale” she says.

The Lyndale Neighborhood Association (LNA) is an award-winning, nationally recognized community-based organization in South Minneapolis on the cutting edge of community development. LNA is currently seeking two energetic people to be Graffiti Busters for Lyndale.

This is a part time seasonal position without benefits.  LNA Graffiti Busters will play an integral role in helping to eliminate graffiti in Lyndale. Graffiti Busters will be responsible for identifying, cataloguing, reporting, and cleaning up graffiti in Lyndale.

Reconstruction Continues

Upcoming construction schedule, weather dependent.

Thomas and Sons has begun with the subgrade grading and adding gravel work on the north end of the project area and will work south. They will begin some concrete work this week or early next, this would include installation of some of the bus pads.

Businesses are open during construction and local access to business and residential driveways will be maintained. However, it will change based on the type and location of the work being done.
