This summer the Lyndale Neighborhood Association will be working with the Minneapolis Police Department on a Bike Cop program for the neighborhood. The money we raise for this program goes to hire off-duty officers to patrol the Lyndale neighborhood on bikes.

The Lyndale Bike Cop Program goes to help:

Stop Crime

Build trust between the police and the community

Let criminals know they are not welcome in our neighborhood

Thanks to the generous support of Lyndale residents we raised over $6,000 for bike cops last year. This year we hope to raise even more. Every $45 dollars that we raise pays for one hour of patrol time.

The LNA board is also offering a special matching challenge to the neighborhood this year to help get the 5th Precinct some new bikes for this program and for officers to use during their regular patrol time. LNA will match on a dollar to dollar basis up to $800 for new bikes for the 5th precinct. We know it’s a lot to ask people to make an additional contribution on top of their regular bike cop contribution, but we think it is important that officers have good bikes to patrol the neighborhood

Questions or comments about the Lyndale Bike Cop program should be directed Mark Hinds at 612.824.9402 ext 16 or mark@lyndale.org

Is Lyndale getting safer? It’s a basic question that we ask almost everyday in the LNA office. Unfortunately, the answer is too often driven more by perception than reality. To try and get to the bottom of this question we’ve been working on an analysis of historic crime trends in Lyndale and the neighborhoods surrounding Lyndale.

To read about Part 1 crimes trends in Lyndale, Kingfield, Lowry Hill East, CARAG, Central, and Whittier see the full report. You can also check all of the underlying data here. You can read the neighborhood policing plans for each neighborhood at the MPD’s website.

Minneapolis Police are appealing for the public’s help to solve the City’s last murder of 2008. They recently announced that Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the Christmas Day murder of 28-year-old Luis Morales-Figureoa.

Figureoa was found shot to death in the street near the intersection of Lake Street West and Pleasant Avenue South at 5 a.m. on Dec. 25. “He was dressed for the weather. But as far as details on how many times he was shot or where he was shot, we’ll have to leave that to the medical examiner,” said Lt. Richard Zimmerman.

According to Homicide Lt. Richard Zimmerman, The motive is unclear; they do not suspect it was a robbery because the victim had a cell phone in his hand and money in his pocket. Police do have a video from a business at the corner showing Morales walking east on Lake Street with another person, believed to be the shooter behind him.

Authorities are treating the incident as a homicide, and do not have any suspects in custody. The Police hope that the reward- the tip can be anonymous- will help explain what happened. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. www.crimestoppersmn.org
