Community News

by Leslie Weddell, ESL classroom volunteer

I am not sure what possessed me to sign up as a volunteer for the Lyndale Neighborhood ESL program. At the time of the first meeting about the upcoming classes, I had about five parttime jobs and was spending any of my free time looking for a full-time job with benefits.  Truthfully, I thought maybe it couldn’t hurt to gain some experience with ESL students and that it might be beneficial to observe how the teacher conducts the class and handles students who are at all different levels in their English language learning journey.

This March the Lyndale Neighborhood will be participating in Minneapolis’ One Read program.  One Read is Minneapolis’ first-ever community read where everyone in town is invited to read the same book.  One Minneapolis, One Read will bring people in the city together to spark conversations about race, family and neighborhood history.  The book is “The Grace of Silence” by Minneapolis native and National Public Radio host Michele Norris.  This memoir describes the experience of the Norrises as the first black family on the block in a south Minneapolis neighborhood.

LNA’s Sustainable Membership Program allows LNA’s supporters an easy, safe, and reliable way to financially support their neighborhood organization. The program will provide LNA with a consistent and predictable level of support that will help support our efforts to create a safe, vibrant, sustainable community by helping us develop strong year round programming, by increasing the support we receive, and by helping balance our cash flow throughout the year.

For last minute gift shoppers and those who want to buy some Christmas baking, come to Redeemer Health & Rehab Center at 31st & Lyndale on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 9 AM to 4 PM.  Many vendors will have items for sale, with something for almost anyone on your gift list.  Such items include hand thrown pottery, large photos of Minnesota landscapes ready for framing, hand sewn or knitted items, jewelry, cosmetics, Christmas ornaments, handmade jams & jellies and, of course, lots of bakery items including krumkake. In addition to selling whole pecan or pumpkin pies, we will also sell pie by the slice! If you have finished all of your shopping, you could just stop by for a free cup of coffee! (We will be gift wrapping any presents you buy.)

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) approved the location and design for a dog park in the Sixth Park District at its December 7 meeting.

The new dog park will be located along King’s Highway in Lyndale Farmstead Park in what is now the lower section of the Southside Operations Center parking lot. The site is the primary recommendation of the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC), appointed by the board in February to study possible dog park sites in the Sixth Park District. The group met twelve times and considered community and staff ideas and concerns, environmental impacts, historic designations, costs, and potential designs to come up with the final recommendation.

A special yard waste collection for City of Minneapolis’ Solid Waste and Recycling customers has been scheduled.  All customers are encouraged to properly prepare and set out yard waste on Wednesday, December 7th, 2011 by 6 a.m.

Properly prepared yard waste will be collected Wednesday, December 7th through Friday, December 9th.  Yard waste crews will not follow typical collection days.  All yard waste must be at the Solid Waste Collection Point on December 7th, 2011 by 6 a.m. to be collected.

This one-time collection is designed to assist customers by providing a convenient method to dispose of yard waste accumulated after the end of the regular yard waste season.

When preparing yard waste:

We want your help with Lyndale's ESL Class.  LNA’s ESL class is a free multi-level and open to adults.  The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Zion Church, 128 West 33rd Street; Minneapolis, MN 55408.  We are looking for volunteers to help with the following jobs:

In-Class Volunteer:  Classroom volunteers will assist the teacher during class time.  Their primary responsibilities will include floating and assisting students with class work, leading small groups through activities, and tutoring students one-on-one and in small groups.  Occasionally in-class volunteers could help model activities or even introduce an activity to the class.  Training on ESL tutoring is available both online and in person.  Volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of training.

La Posada Poster

Join us on Saturday, December 10th for Lyndale's annual La Posada event.   Lyndale’s La Posada is based on the traditional Mexican Holiday celebration which traditionally is celebrated on the streets of Mexico in processions of people knocking on doors asking for a place to stay. They do this for the nine days before Christmas following Mary and Joseph’s journey.   In Lyndale we celebrate La Posada
by sharing traditional food, drinks, and song. Community members have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays bilingually and biculturally in a festive and inclusive family environment.   This year’s event will feature free photos with Santa Dan, tradational Mexican folk dancing by Mexico Lindo, games, and lots of food.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will conduct a public hearing on the proposed site for a dog park in the Sixth Park District. The hearing will be held at 6:30 p.m., November 22, at the MPRB headquarters, 2117 W River Rd.
