2009 City Election Information

Ranked Choice Voting

This year Minneapolis will use Ranked Choice Voting for the first time.

This fall, voters in Minneapolis will be able to rank their choices for Mayor, City Council, Board
of Estimate and Taxation, and Park and Recreation Board.
• Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank multiple candidates in order of preference -
up to three candidates for each municipal office.  Instead of just marking one candidate on the ballot, voters will be able to rank multiple
candidates in order of preference.
• Much like the current system, voters will vote by filling in an oval on a paper ballot.

This new voting process will combine the Primary and General Elections into a single
election so there is no primary and all candidates appear on the November ballot.

The first choice votes for all candidates are sorted and counted. If no candidate receives the
required number of votes to win, a process of eliminating candidates and considering subsequent
choices begins.

You can learn more about how to vote in this system at Vote Minneapolis.

Precinct Finder – This will tell you where to vote.

Candidate Questionaires

To help Lyndale Community Members decide who to vote for LNA mailed questionnaires to all candidates running for 10th Ward City Council, Mayor, District 6 Park Board, and At-Large Park Board.  Candidates we’re also invited to speak at either the September or October General Membership Meetings.  To see each candidates response just click on their name.  We are also including links to candidates’ websites for whom we have them.

CHARTER AMENDMENT NO. 168 (Ballot Question – Yes or No Vote)

PROPOSAL TO CHANGE THE COMPOSITION OF THE BOARD OF ESTIMATE AND TAXATION

Should the City of Minneapolis adopt a change in its charter to the composition of the Board of Estimate and Taxation so that the Board’s membership consists of the members of the City Council, with the actions of the Board subject to the powers and duties of the Mayor?
