Sunday evening, May 22, as I prepared to go home after another long weekend at Butter Bakery, I realized that someone had broken into the office space in which I was sitting and after breaking a lock on a cabinet had stolen a large sum of cash. That this event had occurred sometime during the morning while we were open and serving customers became even more disturbing. After a couple hours of piecing things together with the police and my staff, we determined it to be a pretty standard hit on a small vulnerable business – by a pair, where one of the pair of robbers distracts the staff while the second member sneaks around, breaks into whatever is necessary under the cover of noise and activity and quietly leaves trying to not call attention to the damage or the action. Quite a daring move, pretending to be customers only there to make a purchase and use our customer bathroom, when in reality they were no more than robbers out to take advantage of a small business and its customers.

While it’s not possible to know everything that’s out in front of you while on the trail, I’ve always tried to prepare a lot to make my hikes better. However, even on the trails I’ve walked many times, just bringing a new group of students with me led to pretty different experiences. Things change!
